If there is one thing to say about Laura it’s that she is the epitome of an athlete.  From a very young age, Laura competed in various sports and excelled in each one of them.  As a child, Laura competed in swimming, basketball, softball, volleyball and weight training.  She continued playing softball and volleyball into college and was named as a 1st Team All-American and won state championships in those sports respectively.  Laura also placed first in bodybuilding competitions and set a Maryland state record for the clean-and-jerk for her weight class.  Following her love for swimming, Laura then became a swim coach working with children of all ages and even climbed back into the pool years later to compete alongside her then fourteen-year-old daughter.

Laura began her training in the martial arts in 2010.  Initially motivated by wanting to learn self defense and stay in shape, Laura competed in her first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu tournament after only 8 weeks of training and was immediately hooked.  Laura is extremely dedicated to her martial arts training and has experience in Muay Thai, Lethwei, Judo and Mixed Martial Arts.  Due to her extraordinary dedication and knowledge, Urbana Academy was honored to be able to have Laura join the instructor team as one of our “Little Monkeys” coaches, the Women’s Self Defense instructor, and the Women’s Combatives Program instructor.

Laura was awarded her brown belt in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under Master Pedro Sauer in November, 2018 and loves that she can impart fitness, discipline and self defense to children and women in a very fun way. One of her favorite aspects of her training is that she also trains Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu regularly with her son who just received his yellow-orange belt in April, 2017.  Outside of the school, Laura has two children and has been a public school teacher for over 20 years!
