Judo is a martial art that uses standing techniques to throw opponents. Is was developed in Japan by Jigoro Kano and means the “gentle or yielding way”.
In Judo, opponents use a mix of balance, power, and movement to attempt to subdue each other. Judo does not involve striking or kicking. Judo also uses techniques on the ground to control opponents and uses choke holds and joint locks to submit them. Urbana Academy offers Judo classes for both kids and adults.
Judo emphasizes the larger educational value of training in attack and defense so that it could be a path or way of life that all people could participate in and benefit from. Judo students start by learning how to fall and protect themselves. Drills and other non-competitive practice put more emphasis on flowing movement and safe technique. The power of Judo is that it can be trained by anyone, regardless of age. For many people, Judo is a fun activity, a way of life, a recreational or social activity, and a way of life.
